Her international leadership also includes ground-breaking work to develop indoor air quality (IAQ) standards and the creation of a comprehensive database inventorying products’ VOCs and off-gassing performance, now considered the international standard. Here at home, she led her firm’s work on the largest and first institutional net-zero-carbon building in Canada to date – Mohawk College’s Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation.
Founder & CEO, Urban Living Futures IncUpon her return to Toronto in 2016 and building on sustainability, smart city and innovation experience from a 20+ year career in North America, Europe and Asia, Mikele launched the UPPlift Urban Pilot Platform, a digital market identifying emergent smart city innovations and matching them with pilot hosts. In its inaugural year, “UPPlift: Toronto” attracted over 50 innovator applications. After vetting, 20 were selected resulting in 9 pilot opportunities with a major developer and city authority. Innovations include Artificial Intelligence driven waste sorting; urban ground-covering made from repurposed automotive waste; and solar powered smart benches that provide phone charging, wifi access and environmental monitoring.

The Building Energy Innovators Council (BEIC) is a group of 25 founding members from a wide cross-section of industries that actively promotes innovation, energy efficiency and renewable solutions that will result in value for real estate owners and occupiers. The group held its first 2 day conference with 40 exhibitors in attendance last November. Gord is also working to embed sustainability across BGIS, as well as ensuring the tools and support are in place to help their 80 energy and sustainability managers help clients who are championing and implementing various LEED and NetZero programs.
Vice President, Sustainability, Concert PropertiesOver the past three years Dave has through both advocacy and his professional work led the development of a new regulatory framework for buildings intended to lower greenhouse gases, improve resilience, and increase occupant comfort. Dave led the development of the white paper that led the City of Vancouver, and the Province of BC to introduce the Zero Emissions Building Strategy and the BC Energy Step Code, as well as led the development of the first standard of its kind in the world to specifically be focused on carbon and be applicable to all building types, the Canada Green Building Council's Zero Carbon Building Standard, and the City of Toronto's Zero Emissions Building Framework.
