Building: Design & Development

Donald Schmitt

Partner, Diamond Schmitt Architects Incorporated

A Canadian architect who has consistently championed sustainable design solutions throughout his career and around the world, Don blends best practices of architecture and green design innovation across a wide range of building types. Since 2010, three significant projects designed by Schmitt to attain LEED Platinum certification for sustainability have opened: the Centre for Green Cities at Evergreen Brick Works (home to Delta Management and Canada’s Clean50), the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence at Algonquin College in Ottawa and the CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory in Hamilton. The biofilter living wall pioneered by the firm markedly improves air quality while reducing energy demands for heating and cooling. Don also advocates for sustainable design and responsible construction practices by appearing in speaking engagements, writing op-ed stories and attending conferences.
