Pulse Energy and SES Consulting: Building Performance Management

Combining Energy Information Software (EIS) with the onsite expertise of a consultant is becoming industry best practice for generating energy savings in existing building commissioning programs.

Achieving operational savings in commercial buildings

SES Consulting and Pulse Energy are approved vendors in BC Hydro’s Continuous Optimization Program, which bundles energy auditing services with the deployment of an advanced Energy Information System.

One challenge for energy consultants like SES is not having a clear view into the impact of recently implemented operational changes. Manually measuring and analyzing these modifications is costly and labour intensive. Pulse Energy Manager addresses this challenge by displaying the results in real time through an online web portal, allowing consultants to instantly understand the effects of their actions.

 Persistence of savings

Commercial buildings frequently drift from optimal performance after project completion, causing savings to erode over time. The Pulse™ Adaptive Model helps consultants to achieve persistent savings by notifying users when issues arise. Threshold alerts allow building operators to respond quickly to energy anomalies and therefore keep energy performance optimized. Continued savings is paramount for a successful utility program, and for the accountability and reputation of the vendors involved.

Real time insight

Using the real time insight Pulse Energy’s software provides, SES has found a better way of implementing energy conservation measures. The team implements a change, analyzes the results with the software, and returns one week later to fine tune for maximum savings. Pulse Energy Manager automatically captures the building performance data and provides consultants with easy access to trends, daily savings reports, load curves, and other powerful analytical tools.

Exceptional results

SES Consulting routinely exceeds predicted results and customer expectations, capturing between 5-10% additional energy savings in buildings running the Pulse EIS. Recent results are shown in Figure 2.

Pulse Energy empowers consultants to achieve deeper energy savings, often beyond what can be achieved with a traditional energy audit or measurement and verification process. This reduces overall utility program costs, as the small incremental premium for Energy Information Software adds additional savings and increased persistence, thus reducing the risk associated with energy conservation projects.
