President & CEO, International Institute for Sustainable Development

The Experimental Lakes Area in Northern Ontario is prized for its unique lack of connection to other bodies of water – meaning that what happens there stays there, long providing scientists with an irreplaceable and globally treasured environmental research opportunity. So when the Federal Government decided it could no longer afford the two million dollars per year needed to maintain the program, fortunately IISD, under Scott’s leadership partnered with the Province of Ontario, overcame no end of obstacles, and saved the program.

Beyond that, Canada’s past Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development is possibly the busiest person in the environmental world, serving as the IISD Chair of the Board of IISD Experimental Lakes Area; co-chair of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment (CCICED) Special Study on Environmental Accounting and Auditing in China; co-convener of the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) E15 Task Force on Trade and Natural Resources; Board of Directors, Future Earth and member of Future Earth Engagement Committee; member of UNEP International Advisory Council for the Advancement of Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability; member of the Environmental Leadership Council, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the Blue Ribbon Panel for GLOBE 2016.
