Derek Satnik

Derek is a recognized leader in defining sustainable housing in Canada. He has chaired or otherwise significantly contributed to the creation of all of Canada’s best-in-class housing certification programs, including LEED for homes, mid-rises and neighbourhoods; BUILT GREEN for new, renovated and high density residential; ENERGY STAR for homes; Solar Ready, Net-Zero and Net-Zero Ready; and Ontario’s Green Energy and Green Economy Act. His efforts now affect over 30,000 tonnes of emissions reductions annually. Derek‘s other roles include Chair, Technical & Standards Committee, Built Green Canada; LEED Faculty, Canada Green Building Council; Policy Director, Community Renewable Energy Waterloo; Co-Founder, Local Initiative for Future Energy Co-Operative, Inc.; Managing Director, OntarioGreenSpec.ca; Advisory Board, Ontario Clean Air Alliance; and Vice Chair, Ontario Sustainable Energy Association.


Commitments for 2013: In September 2012 at the Clean50 Summit, most attendees made public commitments for things they would do to "further sustainability" over the next 12 months. Satnik's commitments were:

- I will sponsor on new sustainability initiative in my organization in the next months
- Participate in a clean-tech roadshow to Canadian municipalities
- I/we will advocate the dissemination of balanced, sound information to support informed decision-making
- I will become an ambassador to promote uptake

In Addition: Honourees identified good ideas they liked and would do their best to support. Satnik's "Likes" were:

- I will volunteer on the board of a sustainability-focused organization
- I will challenge one nonbeliever
- I will mentor 1-2 individuals on sustainable development
- I/we will advocate for establishment of municipal bylaws and politics that promote sustainable development/infrastructure
