Promoting the adoption of the optimal management of end-of-life (EOL) refrigerated appliances, Jean and Mattieu have built the only facility in North America that captures 99.9 % of the refrigerants and blowing agents contained in such appliances and achieves more than 96.8% recycling rates. This operation led the government of Quebec to adopt the first Canadian Extended Producers Responsibility legislation that obliges optimal management of refrigerated appliances therefor generating substantial GHG reductions and plastic recycling. The sustained efforts also generated a carbon offset protocol within the Quebec-California regulated carbon market which recognizes that the capture and the destruction of CFC’s and HFC’s generates golden standard carbon offsets. The refrigerator recycling facility created 75 full time Canadian jobs and a 15M$ investment. Next up: talking to every other province and replicating the solution.
