In December 2020, Statistics Canada reported that 14.6% of Canadians experience food insecurity. In the same breath, approximately 2.2 million tonnes of edible food are wasted each year in Canada. At the Food Stash Foundation their mission is to reduce the impact of this food waste and bridge the food insecurity gap, by rescuing and redistributing food perishable food. Between January 20219 and March 2021, they have managed to rescue over 1 million pounds of perishable food and has saved approximately 723,930 CO2-e kg emissions each year. Through partnerships with grocery retailers, wholesalers, and farms, Food Stash connects surplus food that would otherwise go to waste to local organizations and food insecure households.
