Long the largest barrier to climate action in Canada, the oil and gas sector, isn’t giving up – but neither is Julia. For over a decade, she has coordinated national efforts to push back against energy giants, doggedly pursuing a range of campaigns… multiple times. This has been achieved by having letters signed by many hundreds of academics and organisations, warning governments against the dangerous distractions to climate action, and also included ensuring Canada supported global calls at COP27 for a phaseout of fossil fuels. Not stopping there, Julia helped secure important new federal government rules aimed at ending fossil fuel subsidies, and instituting policies that put a stop to new thermal coal mines, while developing rules to ban the export of thermal coal by 2030.
