Kathleen Wynne
Premier, Province of Ontario
In 2013, the federal government tried to close the vitally important Northwestern Ontario’s Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) freshwater research site. Newly elected as Premier, Kathleen stepped in and saved the ELA, foreshadowing a Premier who would position Ontario as an environmental leader. With the province now developing a cap and trade system to reduce carbon emissions, partnering with the Western Climate Initiative, and co-hosting (with MOECC Minister Glen Murray) 22 sub-national jurisdictions at the recent Climate Summit of the Americas, resulting in the first ever Pan-American Climate Action Statement, Ontario is now a leading voice in the global fight against climate change.
