Meet Martin, the cleantech leader making CO2 cool again—literally! Since 2019, Martin has been on a mission to turn CO2 into a valuable input for industries in the form of high-value specialty chemicals. Under his leadership, Electro Carbon Inc. is harnessing a unique electrochemical process to produce potassium formate (HCOOK) from CO2, used across various industries as a de-icing material, fertilizer, and heat-transfer fluid, among other uses. With Electro Carbon’s breakthrough technology, Martin has flipped the script on traditional potassium formate production, which is heavily reliant on fossil fuels and imports from Asia and the Middle East, cutting CO2 emissions by 2.15 tonnes per tonne of product. Martin’s ECO100 electrolyzer has become the world’s largest, with a production capacity of 100 metric tonnes of potassium formate annually – and now they’re revving up for the ECO5000. This marks a major step towards industrial sustainability, especially with major airports hopping on board.
