Mayor Danny Breen
St. John’s climate progress is easiest to see in the numbers. Since 2018, the city has cut its own operational emissions by 22 percent, on pace with its target, retrofitted more than 19 facilities, and approved deep energy retrofits for 166 housing units. Under Danny’s leadership, the city built the province’s largest municipally owned EV charging network, watched local EV ownership jump 75 percent in a single year, and saw transit ridership climb 35 percent as hybrid buses rolled out. Walking and cycling trips are each up 25 percent since 2020, while car trips have edged down. Danny has also included climate risk into city planning, from flood maps to emergency management, making resilience part of the playbook before it becomes an emergency.
