Mayor Don Iveson

Mayor, City of Edmonton

Edmonton, a city in the heart of Canada’s fossil fuel industry, is making great strides toward sustainability with Mayor Iveson at the helm. Having served two terms as councillor and two terms as mayor, Don has led nearly all the green initiatives in the city since elected, including the creation of Edmonton’s Energy Transition Strategy, one of the most progressive in Canada. He also led the development of the Edmonton Declaration, which calls on cities to reduce their emissions to stay within the 1.5-degree limit and has since been signed by more than 3,400 other municipalities world-wide. His work has already led to several programs on the ground, including electrification of public transport with the purchase of 50 electric buses and the start of development at Blatchford, which is the largest planned carbon-neutral community in Canada and designed to house 30,000 residents.
