Megan Nichols

Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Environmental Protection Branch, Environment and Climate Change Canada

Driving large policy initiatives on highways, byways, airways and seaways, Megan has steered sustainable transportation in Canada. She orchestrated a remarkable $1.7 billion rejuvenation of the federal Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles program, alongside a $547.5 million launch for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles. In the sky, after overseeing rigorous assessment of the impacts of COVID-19, she executed the domestic implementation of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation; in the water, she navigated Canada’s triumph in negotiating the first international GHG measure for marine shipping at the International Maritime Organization. She also advanced Canada’s transportation decarbonization efforts at COP26. Beyond emissions reduction, she led vessel slowdowns and other strategies to shield at-risk marine life from ships, including North Atlantic Right Whales and Southern Resident Killer Whales.
