At the heart of sustainability is an inherent challenge—stakeholders have different priorities, and while FCR had already employed a lot of the tried and true practices that all leading property owners employ (adopting science based targets and LEED standards, replacing fluorescents with LEDs, reporting under GRESB and CDP) Melissa realized that getting to net zero was going to require engaging the most critical stakeholder: their tenants. Knowing the whole industry confronted the same issue, she assembled a group of major retail tenants and landlords including Canada’s leading banks, grocers, retailers, and real estate companies, representing ~ $600 billion in market cap and two MT of emissions and hosted a forum.
