Prof. Mark Winfield
Mark has been shaping Canadian environmental policy since 1992, first at the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy, then at the Pembina Institute, well before he became a full-time academic. At York University, he founded the Sustainable Energy Initiative, co-founded the Ontario Network on Sustainable Energy Policy, and helped build the Energy Modelling Hub into a national institution, coaxing $5 million in stable funding out of government and philanthropic partners. He has published two books and more than fifty chapters and articles on energy and climate policy, testified before Canada’s Senate and House of Commons, and fielded questions from the Australian Parliament about nuclear energy in Ontario, proving its energy politics travel further than many Ontarians. Through supervising graduate students, he has also built a small army of policy professionals, sending them off into government, law, and the nonprofit world. Three decades in, he is still building the institutions the next generation will need, for the long haul.
