Prof. Umberto Berardi

Canada Research Chair in Building Science, BeTOP Director, Ryerson University

Umberto’s research program aims to develop innovative building façade systems, integrating nanotechnologies to reduce the energy demand and increase the resiliency of buildings. His work with Phase Change Materials has developed systems that enhance the latent thermal energy storage capacity of façades by storing free thermal energy. Umberto has developed greener foams and highly insulating products with aerogel, which are currently tested using facilities he designed. He’s also actively engaging industry partners to facilitate the transfer from prototypes to actual use. Finally, he has published extensively on the impacts of climate change on buildings and works internationally for the resiliency of the built environment.
