Pairing innovative research with new thinking on green building consulting, Ryan and the team at Mantle supported the City of Toronto’s creation of North America’s first cap on embodied carbon in new construction. Restricting carbon-intensive construction materials, this new regulation currently avoids over 10,000 t CO2e annually, and as it is applied to more buildings in the future via the city’s tiered Toronto Green Standard, it is expected to avoid over 1M t CO2e annually. Ryan was also instrumental in the development of the federal government’s Standard on Embodied Carbon in Construction, which requires all major federal construction projects to use lower-carbon concrete, leading to a 10% reduction in the embodied carbon footprint of concrete used in federal construction.
