Stefany Nieto
Combining an entrepreneurial mindset with determination to alleviate food insecurity in Canada’s most remote regions, Stefany founded Green Iglu to do just that – building geodesic greenhouses to grow greens and root vegetables, in extreme weather conditions, including the Arctic. And this mission is driving impact: In one example, the organization trained local community members in Arviat, NU, who then grew over 9,500 servings of food during their first year – at a 50% cost savings. The impact cannot be overstated: fresh vegetables have greater nutritional value, help reduce community healthcare costs, provide valuable experiential learning opportunities for students, and increase local employment in Indigenous communities. Expansion plans include 3 more communities in 2021. Win-win-win.
