Susan Ancel
With an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events, adaptation to the effects of climate change, like flooding, is as important as mitigation. Susan led the implementation of the Stormwater Integrated Resource Plan (SIRP) for Edmonton, an initiative with an innovative approach to assess risks and prioritize improvements to reduce flooding impacts. The project relied on consultation with the public and partnerships with the insurance sector to broaden focus on the societal impacts of flooding and increase the opportunity for alternative flood mitigation techniques. The SIRP was completed in less than two years and resulted in the approval of a $1.6 billion, 20-year strategy to address flooding risks from health and safety, environmental, social, and financial perspectives.
