With 56% of Canadian children spending 2+ hours a day on a technological device, it is no wonder that Tovah’s launch of the Earth Rangers App was a success. The Earth Rangers app is the first of its kind (a video game parents encourage their children to play), combining gamification theory with tangible environmental action. Since January 2020, 60,000+ users (kids 6-11) completed 128,196 environmental “Missions,” including planting pollinator gardens, organizing shoreline clean-ups, and keeping thousands of batteries out of landfills. Beyond this, Tovah expanded the organization’s mandate to investigate how to address the under-researched emerging mental health phenomenon known as Eco-Anxiety—resulting in Tovah co-authoring a White Paper and developing a framework of essential recommendations and easy-to-use resources for parents to address Eco-Anxiety within their children.
