Mayor Valérie Plante
Montréal is well on its way to becoming Canada’s sustainable, resilient, and biodiverse haven. Under Mayor Plante’s leadership, Montréal adopted a Climate Plan that sets out a clear roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and an ambitious 55% reduction of GHG emissions beneath 1990 levels by 2030.
In addition to a climate test for all city decisions, a Zero-Emission Zone is to be implemented in downtown Montréal by 2030. With the planting of 500,000 trees and the continuing electrification of public transport, the Climate Plan builds on other policies championed by Mayor Valérie Plante. Montréal has an extensive cycling infrastructure network which now will include an Express Bike Network which will connect all parts of the city.
As ICLEI’s Biodiversity Ambassador, protecting biodiversity is her #1 priority. She created the Grand parc de l’Ouest, a large biodiversity park comprised of forests, wetlands, and ecological corridors that is 3,000 hectares large- that’s eight times the size of Central Park! We think this park will help make Montréal even cooler than it already is – and let’s face it
– just way cooler than Toronto!
