Mark Jaccard

Professor of Environmental Economics, Simon Fraser University

For 25 years, Mark has combined his international experiences in energy and environment analysis and policy with his training of graduate students. Most recently, he served as convening lead author for the sustainable energy policy in the Global Energy Assessment, which was released at the Rio Earth Summit in 2012 after five years of international collaboration among the world’s leading energy researchers


Commitments for 2013: In September 2012 at the Clean50 Summit, most attendees made public commitments for things they would do to "further sustainability" over the next 12 months. Jaccard's commitments were:

- I am going to lead by example
- I will understand an question the sustainability platform of my candidates for public office
- I/we will advocate the dissemination of balanced, sound information to support informed decision-making
- I will Lobby for a carbon tax
- I will become an ambassador to promote uptake
- I will build public and peer awareness about importance of action on climate change
- I will launch a public action campaign

In Addition: Honourees identified good ideas they liked and would do their best to support. Jaccard's "Likes" were:

- I will facilitate a discussion in my industry about key sustainability metrics
- I will commit to publishing my Clean50 follow-up actions
- I will host a Clean50 event at which 50% of the attendees are skeptics
- I will work through my industry (or other sector) organization to share best practice and identify synergies
- I will raise sustainability during a dinner party, hockey game, checkout line, etc
- Nominate a politician for the 2014 Clean50
- I will choose a small business and mentor them to help them implement sustainability measurement, strategy, programming, etc
- I will Found or join an organization that will help community groups and low-income families take advantage of energy programs, e g , help them read bills, make choices, get involved
