General Motors of Canada: Local Community Stewardship

One of the 9 corporate-wide sustainability goals set by GM in 2010 was to go beyond GM centric activities, and help educate and drive sustainability initiatives in local communities across Canada. Since 2012, GM Canada has expanded from 11 to 45 community engagements and from 3 to 9 sites, including expanding its flagship education program GM Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN) to engage with ~500 students through 17 events this year.
In Oshawa, 300 people attended GM’s annual Feathered Friends Festival, and in all, 20 of GM’s dedicated staff have partnered with both local community groups and expert external organizations to engage over 5,000 people across Canada in the past year. As a measurable outcome, the team has developed 5 Wildlife Habitat Council – Conservation Certified sites and look to add more shortly.
